Metadata guidelines for describing born digital programs

This report, prepared under the Preserving Digital Public Television (PDPTV) project, provides an overview of descriptive and preservation metadata standards that are considered appropriate for long-term accessibility of digital television programs. Context and metadata types are briefly outlined. The recommendation from the NDIIPP project to work with a combination of PBCore, METS and PREMIS within the OAIS model is taken over by the PDPTV team.

The combination of these four standards is described and their contribution to a trusted digital repository for a public broadcaster. To illustrate the PBCore standard, an example is drawn from the files of a basic PBCore (v.1.0) to record a record WGBH TEAMS. Set forth below are the moments during the production process which metadata creation and responsibilities of the various stakeholders involved. Finally, this recommendation sets out the metadata required for the exchange of the various files in the Library of Congress or other digital repositories.
