Digital Audio Interstitial Errors: Raising Awareness and Developing New Methodologies for Detection

This short document (11 pages) describes a phenomenon knows as a ‘Digital Audio Interstitial Error’ which occurs when a digital audio stream is being written to disc. It makes the case that such an error is more prevalent than spoken of in the preservation community and that no tool exists to properly detect it at present. It also suggests a possible solution being worked on by the authors.

This article clearly states that its goal is to raise awareness of the issue and to ask the field for concrete data on its occurrence in order to stimulate market development of a testing tool. It targets digital content managers responsible for digital object integrity and authenticity. The U.S. Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative (FADGI) has commissioned the authors in a research and development project to work on the problem.
