This report presents an overview of the problems, the technology and the projects currently underway in the audiovisual preservation domain as of January 2010. Beginning with a look at digitisation and its related problems, it goes on to a review of training needs and funding issues related to preservation. The digital management section addresses the problem of digital preservation after digitisation. It includes a survey of current file management strategies (including an explanation on why av files are so difficult to manage), moving content from digital video to files and describes current projects related to these issues. The final chapter on access focuses on solutions (tools, etc) specifically under development for time-based media including time-based annotation, community tagging and metadata interoperability.

This report is valuable in that it offers a thorough overview of all the inter-related issues and initiatives currently being addressed in the audiovisual preservation domain. It is very readable because the author places the problems in context. This is important reading for archivists as well as managers who want to stay on top of initiatives and developments in the field.
