This article, which appeared in the March/April 2011 issue of D-LIB magazine, describes a pilot project undertaken by the University of Colorado Archives to digitize the audio recordings from the Conference on World Affairs (CWA). It begins with some background on the history and significance of the Conference and the collection; the project team; the planning and funding of the pilot; physical characteristics of the collection; the digitization rationale, specifications and process; metadata design and creation; and delivery of the content to the public.

This article offers a ‘case study’ on planning and undertaking an audio digitization pilot project. Its choice, rationale and application of the PBCore metadata schema for an audio collection is particularly interesting and described in some detail. It provides a good overview of all issues to be considered in a digitization workflow and is appropriate for archivists looking for a comprehensive but not too overwhelming look at the issues and decision making involved in such a project.
