Exploring the past : Web experiments at RTBF

The Radio Télévision Belge Francophone (RTBF) has performed a number of web experiments and has fine-tuned an application, Flashback TV, that links television archive material to the semantic web. The public broadcaster set about developing a browser, called GEMS, that unites the raw archive data with information sources on the web. Thus, the portal the online AV-webarchive presents the framework or context together with the original videos that were on the archived webpages. RTBF, in cooperation with Sonuma, is planning to create a rich interface to support researchers, journalists and production assistants to go through the collection and discover unexpected sources. During the final EUscreen conference in September 2012 Xavier Jacques-Jourion (head of the Archives department of RTBF since 2009) explained the application of the semantic web technology and demonstrated the portal (demonstration starts after 16 minutes).

An interesting example of the reuse of the rich material in an AV-archive of a public broadcasting company in combination with the use of Linked Open Data. Demonstrating the power of the semantic web in a video search application.
