This survey report describes audiovisual preservation and access initiatives underway in 2007. It covers the employment of automation technology, provides a ‘short list’ of major conferences and reports and has a section on audiovisual digital files and their preservation. A section on access covers public, commercial and basic research in this area, including initiatives putting content online, search engines and tagging and annotation. It concludes with a look at the PrestoSpace project which ended that year.
This report provides an interesting historical perspective on developments in audiovisual preservation, given that it was written in 2007. The section on digital files offers non-specialists a good introduction to the complexity of audiovisual digital file management.
