Bound by Law? Tales from the Public Domain

This publication employs the comic book genre to help documentary filmmakers in particular, understand intellectual property law and the impact it may have on their productions. Concepts such as ‘public domain’ and ‘fair use’ are explained in an unconventional manner.

This publication is not only interesting in its attempt to explain a complex subject in comic book form, but for its implicit commentary on how copyright law is affecting art and culture and how in a world where everyone is a creator, the laws must change. Because it comes from the U.S. it’s more US copyright law oriented. However, it is useful for creators seeking an easier understanding of a complex subject. As the introduction states ‘The comic form makes this issue into something less abstract, more concrete.’
