This case study on advocacy presents two cases where advocacy, in one of the two cases, helped reverse unwanted governmental changes to an archive’s statutory position in the country. After describing the case of the Australian National Film and Sound Archive and the British National Film and Television Archive, the author presents a ten point guide on how archives can promote their cause through advocacy. It was first published in The Moving Image (Journal of the Association of Moving Image Archivists, Vol 8 #1 , Spring 2008) and was modified slightly and updated for the website version.
Despite the somewhat generic advocacy advice presented in this article, what makes it useful and interesting is that it is set within the context of two real moving image archive cases. The author’s direct involvement in the Australian case brings an added validity to his proposed approach.
