Recommendation on the deposit and acquisition of D-cinema elements

This is a FIAF technical commission technical recommendation on the deposit and acquisition of D-cinema elements for long term preservation and access. It provides a concise description of the key concepts of digital distribution and presents a simple specification for the archival deposit of digital cinema works. Current standards for digital cinema are produced by the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI), which released the Digital Cinema System Specification (DCSS) in 2005 (updated through 2012). This recommendation explains which elements referenced in the DCSS are best to keep for long-term preservation.

This brief (3 page) recommendation from FIAF is meant as a reference sheet for archives collecting digital film. Film archives looking for detailed information on digital film technical specifications as well as requirements for the mastering of, distribution of, and theatrical playback of Digital Cinema content should consult the DCSS.
