This section of the Digital Curation Manual, called Preservation Metadata Instalment, examines the role of preservation metadata (ie metadata issued to guarantee the authenticity and integrity of materials) in the digital management cycle. Attention is paid to the concepts of fixity, viability, renderability, understandability, and/or authenticity in a digital environment. This chapter presents a clear picture of the role of the creator, user and curator of digital data, when it comes to entering and maintaining of ‘preservation metadata’.
