The document defines the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) technical specifications and requirements for the mastering of, distribution of, and theatrical playback of Digital Cinema content. DCI was created by seven motion picture studios: Disney, Fox, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Studios, and Warner Bros. Studios with the purpose of establishing uniform specifications for Digital Cinema. The specification covers not only the details on the distribution master format but also details on theatrical playback and security.
This document presents a specification agreed to by Hollywood studios and is a voluntary requirement. It is of interest to film archives collecting digital cinema as it defines many technical and playback parameters as well as security concerns (encryption, etc) all of which need documenting in order to ensure the long-term preservation of such materials. Unfortunately the ‘errata’ corrections have not been incorporated into one document; archives will have to refer to separate updating documents (2008-2012) on the DCI website to stay current with the latest specification.
