Accessioning and Managing File-Based Born Digital Video

This presentation given at the 2009 AMIA conference, offers a strategy and workflow for accessioning and managing file-based digital video (video that is recorded digitally at its point of creation, not Digital Betacam tapes or files that have been digitized from analog media such as U‐matic or Betacam SP). It describes how to take advantage of existing embedded technical and structural metadata as well as the pros and cons of file normalization and obsolescence monitoring in managing risk over the long term.

This offers a clear and well organized introduction to considerations when managing digital video files. It is especially helpful for smaller or medium sized archives who are confronted with this material and may not have the technical expertise to deal with it. It provides a practical approach and includes references to applicable tools. It does not go into detail about the post-ingest, long-term management of digital files, but focuses on the important considerations at the time of accessioning.
